Barbecue for You
by Laura Kjer
http://www.shopbarbecue.com

In may just be in human nature to barbecue. Well,
we have been doing it as far back as time can
denote. In the Stone Age, man hunted for food and
cooked it over an open flame. And while we still
cook over flame today, there are actually two
different types. True barbecue requires a sauce.
If not, you are just grilling. While both are
good, barbecue involves slowly cooking the meat
with low temperature for hours.

When you think about going to a barbecue, you
probably think of yummy, juicy food such as
hamburgers and steak or even a good hot dog with
all the fixins~. The term barbecue does not only
refer to the food but also to the event itself.
The act of gathering together with friends and
family to enjoy good food, drinks and a great time
has been an honored tradition for generations. It
doesn~t matter where you live or where you are
from, the barbecue is a popular get-together.

While there's no question that the barbecue is an
American delicacy, there are many different
theories as to where its origins lie. The state of
Texas, Virginia, the Carolinas, or Georgia, each
area has it's own definition and history of
barbecue. It may well be that each area has it's
own rightful claim to the barbecue history as each
uses different methods and sauces to make their
own unique barbecue.

And there would be no BBQ without a Texas barbecue
sauce, which is thick and sweet with a rich tomato
flavour. Texas sauce also uses a dry-rub mixture
of seasonings which is applied to the beef and
then the meat is hung over the BBQ to slow cook.

Southeast barbecue sauce is slightly different. If
you get BBQ sauce in Georgia it will likely be
thinner and with more vinegar. Another difference
in the barbecue is that instead of beef, they use
more pork. You will also see barbecue pits used
often. This method ~smokes~ the meat giving it a
great smoked in flavor. Pit barbecues are very
popular and leave you with great tasting meat.

Everyone that barbecues comes up with their own
technique, their own ~secret formula~ and their
own favorite barbecue sauce. You may discover your
own. Whether you prefer a Midwest or southeast BBQ
flavor or even a combination of different ones,
you will have fun discovering your own taste and
the fun and socialization you get from having a
barbecue. So the next time you are at a barbecue
or hosting one of your own, spark some
conversation by asking people if they know the
difference between barbecue and grilling or Texas
BBQ sauce and Georgia sauce.
